Technicians x Administrative workers

Hi, Palika,
I think I didn't express myself well. I was talking about the relevance of the knowledge that is exchanged. In the routine work, there is a lot of knowledge in procedures and standards.
In case of technicians, as their work is more creative, I belive they have much more to change as lessons learned, alerts and best practices.

Regards, Raquel

For what emplyees is it more effective?

I cannot say that I agree with you. What you say might be true to some extend. But it will be effective for employees who are involved with administrative activities too. Because they will have to do the same activities again and again every year. What do you think?

For what kind of employees it is more effective?

I believe that technicians can do it better than those involved with administrative and routine activities. Do you agree with me?

Knowledge Management in Business Enterprises

I agree it is difficult to transfer knowledge, especially Tacit knowledge. Does it work as a good tool for some new employees than the others? To which organizational cultures is it most effective?

Practices for new staff

Hi, Palika,

We have some practices in course focusing the transmission of knowledge to our new staff: coaching, mentoring, shadowing and storytelling - for tacit knowledge -, some kind of information management structure (as a little taxonomy in some areas) and knowledge foruns, where they can exchange and found experts opinions.

But it doen't cover all the company, and reproducing those practices is still a challenge for us, cause each area has a different organizational culture, do you believe? This is a common problem of big companies.

Raquel Balceiro

Benefits of KM

If you have knowledge management practices in the organizations doesn't it improve the level of understanding and the experience of the new comers? Because the experienced people can transfer tacit knowledge to the new comers up to some extent.

So if you incorporate KM practices while coaching the newly recruited staff, won't they have a better understanding of the organization and its activities?

Business applications of KM

We´re facing a big challenge in Oil and Gas Industry in Brazil: to cover a gap of 15 years without hiring anyone.

Now we have to deal with a extreme situation where a lot of people are retiring and new ones are coming, asking for business knowledge. The olders don't have enought time to transmit their knowledge, and leaders didn't give to it the real priority. Information management isn't a best practice - there're a lot to do in this field too.

Our work consists to convince and to obtain attention for this kind of questions, asking the high level what to do to prevent the crisis (of course, we know and can offer them some alternatives). They're starting to concern about those questions and they are destining resources to knowledge management practices and initiatives.

Most of them are very simple: coaching and shadowing are good examples. People are doing it with some pleasure. It's very nice to see that enrollment makes all the difference!

Re: Benefits of KM

Dear Palika,

Although it's very difficult to measure the benefits of KM, it's possible to see some of these business objectives reached after the implementation of a KM Program:
1. more innovation;
2. better clients attendance;
3. costs reductions;
4. re-work/time reduction;
5. quality improvement.

You can ask me: can the KPIs grow even we didn't do anything?

I would say: you're always doing something. A company always does KM, even when it doesn't have a structured program to do it. KM can even be made in a unsystematic way too!!!

A multi-purpose discipline: KM

Palika,

KM has so many applications, especially in business, that people often incline to forget that it underpins more familiar disciplines or activities.
