What is qualification for KM jobs?

23-Nov-05

Hi...All,

I am Arumugam doing Infomation and Knowledge Management training (18 months) in National Centre for Science Information, Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore.
This training programme includes course work, assignments, lab work, seminars, and an eight months project.

Now i am searching Knowledge Management related jobs. My qualification is MSc(Applied Biology) and MLISc(Master of Library and Information Science). I having 3 years experience in Information and Knowledge Management.

For knowledge mangement job, most of the organizations recriuting the candidates with different backround like MBA, BE, MSc(computer Science), MCA. Only few organizations are recruiting people from Library and Information Science.

Actually I guess people from Library and Information Science along with this kind specialized training(IKM) can perform better knowledge management in organization. Because they are already involved in collect, select, store, organize, share, apply, and reuse of organizational knowledge.

So, I would like to ask your opinion about this topic .

Thanks and Regards,
P. Arumugam,
IKM Trainee,
NCSI, Indian Institute of Science,

IT Chalenges

Hello everyone, You can see IT dominance in each and every field of science it may be management science, information science, technological science or any other field of science. IT has covered all the field of Science in short span of time. Just see the Research institute, information centre,KPO or any other scientific institute. Can you imagine such institute run without IT? NO. so it's better for knowledge workers to be familiar with IT because without IT they are like soldiers without weapons. As a library professional I strongly recomended professionals of my field to acquire knowledge of IT otherwise its a very difficult to survive in our field because in our field we are facing the chalenges of IT so dont avoid it, its better to face it otherwise we have to face crisis of survival. that we dont want at any cost. SURVIVAL FOR FITTEST is the new mantra of knowldge era. we have to accept it.

feel difference

my dear friend(s), i m also qualified librarian. I did my B.Sc. and master in library and information science. i think the field of knowledge management is so much depends on mathematics (which is not taught in library scince field) because trouble shooting is an integral part of knowledge management so knowledge management organizations recruit persons who have background of engineering, computer science and management. Persons who have background of library scince have no idea of trouble shooting so knowledge management organizations hesitate to recruit such persons in the field of knowledge management.

Nothing specific

I dont think one needs to be an MBA in KM specialization to hold a KM job, rather one should be smart enough to facilitate the rapid transfer of Knowledge both tacit and explicit across the organisation, to be a KM-Champion,

missed out on the 3 years

Forgot to ask:you mentioned 3 years in Library science and KM. But in the later part you haven't mentioned explicitly job in KM.
Did you get an opportunity to use your KM skills on the job?If yes, then my previous reply will have an add on -continue to strengthen KM practices in the existing place of work until you show tangible (read measurable) benefits (ROI)

Real time stint in KM

Hi Arumugam,
Interesting to read that you have learnt quite a few diagnostic methods needed for KM.
I wld suggest try implementing this in some firm to get hands on. This will help bridge the gap between precept and practice and also
give you insights into the real time challenges in implementing a KM program .This in turn wld better equip you for KM jobs in the big companies.

Check out Naukri

Mr Arumugam,

if you connect to an Indian site called rediff.com, you will find an infinity of job offers. Among others, they have a sort of job seeking robot called Naukri, where you can post your CV, resumé, etc.

It might be a good idea if you in your add explained which aspects of KM you would like to handle, as it is not certain that a prospective employer has any idea about KM and its potential.

I wish you good luck ,,,I.G.,,,

Somewhere a KM job is waiting for you - keep knocking

KM jobs are pretty much available in:

Business Consulting:
KPMG, IBM, Accenture, Mckinsy
QAI
IT Products & Services:
Oracle, SAP, Hummingbird
Wipro, Infosys, Satyam, CTS
Telecom:
Bharati Televentures (this has very good KM team)
KM is a must in all Telecom companies (no exception here)
Engineering:
BHEL, ONGC, Tata Steel, L&T
All pharma companies require a KM job.

Currently experienced people perform these important and very strategic roles. That's the kind of experience and power required to understand the pulse of the organization and to motivate the entire team to drive KM successfully.

You should focus on "managing KM systems", researching on KM to assist the KM leaders. Shoot your resume to all the companies I have listed above. You will land up in the right place. Communication, leadership ability and real insight into KM are the keys to success. There are many KM systems development jobs that may not fit you right now.

More and more KM jobs are getting created. Most of the time, they chose someone internally to take up this new role. This trend will change because the demand will increase.

We should not be surprised if more and more BPO/KPO companies come up with needs for KM jobs.

Wish you all the best.

Thank you ..Mr. Lakshman Pillai

Dear Mr. Lakshman Pillai

Ya...I agree to your comments. KM is about people, process and technology.

I am having experience in both LIS and KM. I am having one and half year experience in LIS and got specialised training in Infomation and Knowledge Management(18-months) from NCSI, Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore,India.
I guess this is the only one training programme(18-months) providing such kind of training for KM in India. From this training programme, i got good knowledge in following areas:

Implementation of Knowledge Management Strategy.
Knowledge Audit.
Knowledge Mapping.
Business Intelliegence, Competitive Intelligence
Managing Lessons Learned, Best Practice, Story Telling Databases.
Knowledge Management Portal Development.
Organizing Community of Practice, Brain storming Sessions.
Balanced Scorecard & Performance Metrics.
Knowledge harvesting
Experience in Information Economics.
Oraganizational learining,
Development nad maintainance of CMS/KM, E-learning portal.
Online searching such as database search, E-journals, Patent search.
Customer and employee studies
Developing and maintance of E-Libraries/Digital Libraries/Institutional Repository.

Last week i applied for one company, they asked MBA qualification. Job responsibility almost suitable for me. My friend having MBA degree and he don't know even what is Knowledge Management. We both applied in same time. He callled for interview. But they did not call me. Even though i am having exprience from Knowledge Management, i was not called only for the reason, I have Master's in LIS .

I already registered in 5 job websites.
Can you please guide me to approuch Indian Companies to get KM jobs.
Would appreciate if someone throws light upon this.

Thanks and Reagard,
