KnowledgeBoard Newswire #123 - Dave Snowden visits, Contactivity, new Complexity SIG

KnowledgeBoard #123 - 9 February 2006

EDITOR'S NOTE

On Tuesday next week, we will be discussing the Cynefin Centre's

'Knowledge Transitions' concept with Dave Snowden in the KB

chatroom. This is a rare opportunity to meet Dave and discuss

debatably the most ambitious active global KM project to date.

Please join us; it is bound to be very enlightening.

We are currently collecting statements of interest about our new

SIG on complexity in organisations (Dave would approve). If you

would like to see this group emerge on KB, let us know by reading

Carol Webb's excellent statement of intent and making a comment.

It has proved very popular so far!

Our multi-KM-network gathering in April, 'Contactivity', is now

formally open and you are warmly invited to attend. The event

wiki is now ready and we are in CoP phase 1: Build Community. If

you like the idea, have a look and join us. We are breaking new

ground in event organisation, and are determined that everyone

goes home with more than they expect.

There is plenty of new editorial and commentary on KB and the

first forum is now open. Sorry for the delay and a genuine thank

you from me for all your feedback. We are back to business as

normal, so let the reading, sharing and learning continue.

Best wishes,

Ed Mitchell

SIG AND OTHER CONTENT HIGHLIGHTS

Meet Dave Snowden at the Knowledge Transitions special event

14 February, online in the KB chatroom, 15:00-16:00 CET

(CET is Central European Time, 1 hour ahead of GMT)

We are proud to invite you to meet Dave Snowden in a free online

event next week:

We are facing a demographic time bomb over the next decade as the

baby boomers reach retirement. The impact of this in the economic

field is well known, in particular the position on pensions,

social welfare, health provision and so on. Less well documented

but no less critical are the issues on loss of knowledge. The

issues raised are not new, but demographics are giving them a

sharp focus and new techniques and approaches are emerging. These

also apply to high turnover organisations and other more generic

KM issues...

You are warmly invited to Contactivity 2006

Contactivity is a highly interactive, learning goals-oriented

meeting of minds from all KM networks and professional paths. It

is designed to surface your organisational issues in advance and

uncover practical solutions together. It is a CoP because we will

work together across a pre-defined lifecycle (in both the virtual

and physical environments), and we use co-creation to ensure that

we are discussing issues you choose.

Jakarta Lucerne

The latest commercial enterprise search offerings from vendors

such as, Autonomy, Google, Convera or FAST are powerful, but

pricey too. A shoe string budget and pressuring deadlines are the

most common constraints in today.s projects; considering open

source software for a start seems to be a fair alternative.

Free Open Source Software for a directory of expertise

Hilda asks: 'Have any of you come across a free and/or open

source application that can be used to create a directory of

expertise? Alternatively, are any of you using the personal

homepage function of a content management system (I am a huge

Plone fan) as a directory of expertise?'
