Report on the II International HR Conference "Knowledge Management" in Kiev

29-Mar-06

The first wide discussion about Knowledge Management as a part of HR management responsibility took place in Kiev, Ukraine, on February 23-24, 2006. It was organized by the Conference House company and its partners - Innoware and Ward Howell International. The very positive moment was that for the first meeting the organisers has found the right focus: people, their knowledge, skills, learning, development of the competencies and the role of HR specialists in these processes. Many companies and enterprises, both national and western, which are working in Ukraine, Russia and Belarus, had the opportunity to show their approaches and methods in Knowledge Management. The general amount of participants was about 130.

The main slogan of the conference was as follows: "Knowledge s born in communication" - with one another on the working place, with partners, clients, competitors. The reports and discussions were separated on several parts:

  • Part 1. General understanding of Knowledge Management system - the main elements, advantages, and introduction level.
  • Part 2. HR elements of Knowledge Management system .
  • Part 3. Employees training. New formats of training and development.
  • Part 4. Demo-trainings and master-classes.
  • Part 5. Corporate universities: function, aims, practice of creation.
  • Part 6. Round-table: "How to keep knowledge in company or how to minimize the loss when trained employees are leaving the company".

Among the participants and speakers were representatives from large and medium Ukrainian enterprises and bank sector, consulting firms and business schools, IT and training companies, mass media. The conference has shown that highly educated and well-skilled people in companies and enterprises can receive new opportunities to improve their development and performance within Knowledge Management paradigm.

Sometimes, however, the existing legislation serves as a barrier for implementing new methods. It is especially actual for large enterprises with old instructional and procedural base. The first experience of Knowledge Management implementation has shown that there are at least two main difficulties. Sometimes the principles of the organisation of communities are not clear from the very beginning. In these cases we should more trust the people. Sooner or later they will find the appropriate form of self-organisation.

Another difficulty concerns the content management. It is a permanent problem for both beginners and experienced organizations. Nevertheless, it is evident, that the interest, energy and enthusiasm of young Ukrainian business can contribute its own features to Knowledge Management practice.
