EDITOR'S NOTE

It is Friday, this newsletter is a day late. Sorry. We have just

finished transcribing the reports from Contactivity, our event

last week, and wanted to hold the newsletter until all the

information was ready for publication. The event was huge fun and

I hope the report captures some of the brilliant vitality and

attitude between all the attendees, facilitators and organisers.

Sami Kazi and Patricia Wolf (the editors) are rightly proud of

our shiney new book: 'Real- life Knowledge Management: case

studies from the field'. All of the case studies are from KB

members who are out there doing KM and sharing their experiences

with us. It is spilling over with stories and practical learning

points and is free. It is published under a Creative Commons

licence so please read it, print it, comment on it, share it,

discuss it, spread the word. It is wonderful.

As put by Roger Cowell: ' For me, this book is an instant success.

Already today, having downloaded it, I've had the e-book

spiralbound, and am sharing parts with colleagues...'. That's the

spirit!.

Best wishes,

SIG AND OTHER CONTENT HIGHLIGHTS

KB event report: Contactivity 2006, 10-11 April 2006

Contactivity was a very practical two day gathering of 64

Knowledge Management (KM) practitioners, academics and

consultants, modelled within a Community of Practice (CoP)

framework across both the virtual and physical worlds.

Theoretically, it exists in an ongoing stream of KB research

exploring the 'seams' between virtual and physical CoPs.

New city spaces for the urban university in the knowledge economy

The European Union has aspirations to be leading the world in

terms of a knowledge based economy through the Lisbon Agenda.

Cities have a distinctive place in the economic development

picture envisaged by Lisbon. Emerging work patterns show the huge

growth of the independents in this knowledge economy, many people

acting as freelancers and home workers.

Between a Rock and Cyber Space: Nonprofits, Knowledge, and Technology

This paper is a call to action. In it, the authors provide

definitions of knowledge and lay out some key challenges and

opportunities for the nonprofit sector. We call for the building

of a nonprofit knowledge system and suggest prerequisites for

such a system.

Articles on formal ontologies from FOMI 2005 (1)

Corporate knowledge models are one of the most attractive themes

in applied research nowadays, as well as in the business world,

as many of the theoretical results have already proven their

practical applicability for application fields like data

warehouse construction. These articles were presented at FOMI

2005, who have kindly allowed us to publish them.

KnowledgeBoard is proud to present its first book based on case

study contributions from its members.

'Real-Life Knowledge Management: Lessons from the Field' is about

the art and practice of knowledge management in real life

small and medium enterprises, sports centres, the aerospace

sector, the automotive industry, the construction industry, the

IT sector, the maritime industry, the mould and die making

water management sector. The case studies draw from a pool of

experience spanning Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Finland, Germany,

India, Israel, Italy, Norway, South Africa, the Netherlands, and

the United Kingdom.

Articulating the value of knowledge sharing

Rosey Nugent is interested in understanding how we articulate the

value of knowledge sharing. Many of us intrinsically know that

knowledge sharing can add value, but we struggle when we need to

articulate it clearly and concisely (yet alone demonstrate it!).

This seems to be particularly true when talking about sharing our

knowledge out to others (as opposed to receiving knowledge). Is

anyone able to point her to any good thought leadership on this?

Relationship between KM and Six Sigma

Sam Zeal asks '...Quality measures focus on process improvements

in a best way to implement existing processes. Six sigma used for

process improvement for business process or even KM processes so

as to put KM at best quality standards. This enhancement can

results in best content design or KM structure or documents

submission, validation etc processes. I request to all KB members

to put there valuable insights on this new look for KM and

encourage them to share there experiences, links/ articles/ case

sources'.
