Complexity provides a mathematical basis for the study of the way that organizations, structures and systems emerge and evolve over time. They do so as the result of successive structural instabilities that may either be widely separated in time (discontinuous evolution) or flow into one another for a system in total flux. The key process is the dialogue between existing structure and the fluctuations and disturbances in its environment, and within itself. In this way context and internal diversity play key roles in the emergence and evolution of organizations, changing the nature of explanation and understanding that we can have about the world. Organizations only persist if they are able to change and transform themselves successfully over time, as new behaviours invade the system and existing ones are eliminated. This means that Complexity is really addressing the science behind ideas such as the “creative destruction” of Schumpeter:

“The problem that is usually being visualized is how capitalism administers existing structures, whereas the relevant problem is how it creates them and destroys them.”

Joseph A. Schumpeter (1938) Capitalism, Socialism and Democracy, page 84

leadership makes a sense

Man’s knowledge, purpose, intuition, aspirations should not be weighted in terms of sounded designations. Human values, family traditions, behavioral dynamics, accredited curriculum are the things that change the mental attitude whereas he is a peon or a chairman in the organization. I have seen that the public sector and the nationalized industries are the worst sufferers and in the absence of the leadership vacuum, less than one percent of MBA, IITians and specialists makes the organizational efficacious sense into far below level of the global standard in the context of Indian public sector banks, Indian oil corporation, Indian Railways. Since I am in State bank of India, "Banks slogan think big think global -a mockery or a reality can be read and it would be the summum bonum Man' s knowledge, purpose, intuition, aspirations should not be weighted in terms of sounded designations. Limited role of stakeholders, restricted ownership structure, absence of independent directors and if at all that too in a farcical state to be fool stakeholders due to anomalous manipulations, and paralytic government.

Complexity and Creative Destruction

Although unable to attend I would be very interested to receive information about the outcome of this event.

Attendees may be interested in my latest paper related to this subject. It is "Achieving Sustainable Development: The Integrative Improvement institutes Project" which was presented at the Inaugural All China Economics International Conference in Hong Kong on 19 December 2006. A copy is available online at
