Guidelines for SIG editors
15-Jul-05
Special Interest Groups (SIGs) on KnowledgeBoard are communities of practices focussing on specific aspects of and approaches to knowledge management and related disciplines. The members interact and contribute on a voluntary basis because the community and their involvement is valuable to them.
Each SIG organises itself around its subject with those activities that serve best its purpose - nothing is predefined. However, there is a role that seems to be essential for the success of a SIG: The SIG leaders or SIG editors role.
The SIG leaders/editors are co-responsible for the coordination of the activities in general, for stimulating discussions and editing and publishing relevant papers in the SIG space.
Main tasks of the SIG leader are as follows:
- Build a climate of trust and involvement
- Lead and foster the development of the SIG, sourcing and adding new content on a regular basis, ensuring quality
control, editing where required in accordance with Editorial guidelines. But their leadership should not
dictate all content of the SIG of course. - Guide and develop member discussions
- Encourage new participants, providing them with
information about the aims and objectives of the SIG. - Answer general queries about their SIG.
The purpose of this paper is to provide SIG editors with a detailed overview of aspects concerning moderation, editing and the organisational issues concerning the facilitation of a Special Interest Group on KnowledgeBoard.
The document is based on contributions from the project team, well-accepted guidelines for Internet communication, and personal best practice experiences from our SIG editors. We would be glad to receive your comments.
Best regards

I too am interested in the editor position. I am a Ph. D. Student completing comps over the next several months and a dissertation on knowledge management in project management.
I am also a certified PMP working in IT for about 18 years or so. Although I have sat along the sidelines since I have joined the knowledge board I am defiantly interest in getting more involved. I would like to know what is the current time commitment.
