Description

This paper reports on an empirical study on the role of ICT tools and facetoface meetings in the development of shared understanding in virtual teams. For this study twenty-six team leaders of distributed teams from six international organizations were interviewed. Results of this study show how ICT tools and facetoface meetings are used. Traits from media synchronicity theory could be identified and linked to individual tools and the development of shared understanding. Combined use of tools in meetings is also discussed. The paper concludes with a list of guidelines for the use of tools and face-to-face meetings, to improve development of shared understanding.
